Drama Review of 'Doctor Stranger' Ep 4

Moving on to episode 4; Dr Moon succeeds in recruiting Park Hoon in the hospital's new thoracic surgeon team.  Park Hoon's abilities as a doctor are indisputable as shown by the video of his prior open chest surgery.

However, Dr Han (Han Jae Joon) still questions from which medical school did he graduate from.  All the doctors in the meeting are curious about where Park Hoon graduated.  After a few minutes of silence, Hoon reveals that he graduated from PyongYang Medical school, shocking everybody including Dr Moon as they realize that Hoon is from North Korea.

Everyone leaves the room with disbelief.  Dr Han asks Dr Moon on whom does he expect Park Hoon to perform surgery on.  Dr Moon replies on the Premier (Prime Minister) of course.  Dr Han then leaves saying do you think the premier would want a N.Korean refugee to operate on him.

Me: You don't know how wrong you are Dr Han.  The Prime Minister knows very well that he needs Park Hoon to operate on him to survive.

Even Dr Moon looks down on Hoon because he is a refugee and throws a few notes at him saying its to compensate him for transport.  Hoon picks up the notes uncaring about Dr Moon's insults at him.Oh Soo Hyun saw the scene and insults Hoon that he has no pride.  Hoon retaliates back saying whether her white coat is what gives a quack doctor like her pride.

I think Hoon has done nothing wrong and does not deserve to be insulted like that just because of his origins.  He is definitely the best doctor among them all and has a past that none of them would ever understand.
His past and his determination are what makes him such a great character in this drama.  He is definitely not a coward and would go at any length to find Jae Hee. (Even to the point of selling his whole body like he replied to Dr Moon).  Oh Soo Hyun does not realise that for Hoon who has someone he cherishes dearly and wants to save at any cost, pride would not really matter in certain situations.

However, the President of the hospital saw Park Hoon's surgery skills in the video and wants to hire him.  He decides to hire Park Hoon in Dr Moon's team to create competition with Dr Han's team.
(This is going to be interesting ^^)

Park Hoon accepts the job since he needs the money to get Jae Hee out of North Korea (he still thinks Jae Hee is in North Korea).  I'm starting to think maybe Jae Hee is a swindler or spy or something like that... or maybe it's just my imagination again...

Next we move on to Oh Soo Hyun who finds her biological mother in the hospital in a comatose state as she is in terminal stage of lung cancer.  However the patient was placed in DNR (i.e Do Not Resuscitate stage).  Oh Soo Hyun tries to hide that she is affected by the news of her mother's terminal illness but she does care.
On the other hand Park Hoon tries his best to resuscitate the patient despite the DNR order.
With much difficulty, Hoon succeeds in resuscitating the patient but Oh Soo Hyun argues with him that he should not have saved her because she is suffering due to the cancer and would have preferred to die.
Park Hoon replies that if the patient had no will to live even CPR would not have resuscitated her.

While checking the patient, Hoon comes across the red bracelet around her wrist.
He remembers that it is the bracelet he gave to Jae Hee long ago meaning Jae Hee really came to that hospital.  He calls the doctor who transferred the patient to their hospital but is informed that the doctor Han Seung Hee (in fact Jae Hee) has left.  Hoon asks about who the guardian of that patient is but the nurse on the other end of the line replies that there are no guardians.

I think Hoon just gives up too easily on those obvious hints.  Come one he even saw Jae Hee, how come he still believes that she is in North Korea...the only proof he has is the video, but that video could have been filmed from way before.  This is a flaw in the drama....

Anyway, Hoon chooses the hard way to find out about Jae Hee.  He decides to save the terminally ill patient Kim Eun Hee and ask her personally who gave her the bracelet.Although he knows that the surgery is very difficult; even in his mental simulations he does realize the high risks of failure.  But he still tries the mental simulation of the surgery over and over again.

On the other hand, Dr Han Jae Joon will not risk attempting such a surgery knowing that the chances of success are very low and that the patient might die during the surgery.  This makes the big difference between Park Hoon and Han Jae Joon.

However, Oh Soo Hyun suddenly decides to remove the life support of her mother to stop her suffering by letting her die.  I don't know what to say in this case...how can someone even muster the courage to do that?
One by one she turned off the machines supporting her mother's life...But can this even be called courage or just pity...or a combination of both?

Suddenly Kim Eun Hee gently grabs her daughter's hand just as Soo Hyun was going to leave.  I think she still has the will to live like Hoon said before.
Unfortunately Park Hoon has still not found the right surgical procedure to save Kim Eun Hee.  I hope he can save her on time.

Soo Hyun desperately calls Han Jae Joon, but the latter does not pick up the phone, reluctant to carry out the surgery which could be a failure for his team.
Eventually, Soo Hyun decides to ask Hoon to do the surgery, but Park Hoon refuses because he realizes that the chances of success are really too slim and even if he succeeds the patient might still suffer a lot.

Oh Soo Hyun succeeds in convincing Hoon by telling him that the patient is her mother and to save her.
They perform the surgery but the patient heart beat stops during the surgery and despite all their efforts cannot be brought back to life.

Soo Hyun refuses to believe that it is over and tries to revive her mother's heart beat  (this scene might look gross to some viewers).  Hoon tells her to stop knowing it's too late.

Hoon hugs the crying Soo Hyun who keeps on begging him to save her mother.  Dr Han Jae Joon comes in right at that moment to see both of them hugging.  This episode ends sadly for Oh Soo Hyun and with bitterness for Han Jae Joon.

Lets see what will happen next.
