Chinese Drama: 'Ming Yang Hua Gu' / 名扬花鼓 - Part 3

Hi Everyone

Welcome back to Alice Chronicle for another recap of the drama 'Ming Yang Hua Gu'.

This time we have reached Episode 19 :)

I hope you enjoyed reading the recaps so far ^^

This episode begins with our two main protagonists Ming Yang & Hua Gu thinking about each other and slowly realizing that they have fallen in love for each other.

Ming Yang is ordered by the King to take care of a mission outside the province.  Ming Yang meets Hua Gu at the Wishing Tree to tell her that he'll be away for a while.

Ming Yang & Hua Gu have a heart to heart talk

Hua Gu asks Ming Yang if he is going on a dangerous mission.  Ming Yang tells her that there is no way that he'll get hurt.  Still Hua Gu tells him to be careful

Ming Yang asks Hua Gu if she has ever hidden anything from him. Flustered by his question, Hua Gu jokingly replies that there are many things she hasn't told him about herself for example she hasn't told him that she cannot cook & cannot make embroidery.  She likes to play

and be noisy and in fact she is a man.  Ming Yang's attitude has changed so much towards Hua Gu.  It's really sweet how he tells her that it doesn't matter to him if she has ever hidden anything from him because in his heart she is will forever just be herself.  Hua Gu agrees and replies:  That's right I'll still be myself.  Ming Yang continues by telling Hua Gu that she is so kind, smart & cute that he doesn't think that there is anyone in this world who would think of hurting her.

Hua Gu is really surprised by his words and asks him if he is being sincere.
Ming Yang confirms with a brief 'hmph' sound XD (Lol what a 180 degree change in opinion ^^'')

Hua Gu then asks Ming Yang if he'll think of her when he is away.   Ming Yang shyly avoids the question by asking 'what about her?'.
Hua Gu immediately replies: Of course she will (think about him).  (Ming Yang smiles at her response,  But then in embarrassment replies that she usually thinks about all her friends too.

Ming Yang replies that he probably will not think of her because he has to concentrate on his important mission so there is too little time for him to waste in thinking about her.

Hua Gu starts sulking after hearing Ming Yang's answer.

To make matters worse, Ming Yang tells her that she won't be troubled if he doesn't think of her because his brother will be here to think of her.

Hearing Ming Yang's words, Hua Gu turns even more unhappy.

Ming Yang then tells her to wait for him to return so that they can have a drink and chit-chat.

Hua Gu smiles again as she makes this promise with Ming Yang.  The latter then pulls her to sit on the nearby bench to make a pinky

promise.  (Aaawww cute XD Ils sont trop mignons tous le deux XD hahaha)

While holding Hua Gu's hand in a pinky promise, Ming Yang slowly unfolds his fingers to hold Hua Gu's whole hand in his :)

Aaawww they look so adorable ^^

The way they smile shyly at each other, then look away and look back at each other again (>_<)

I can't get enough of these two.

They even have their own special theme music during their sweet moments together.

This moment is just so simple but yet so meaningful with their small gestures.

They don't have to kiss or anything, simply holding hands like that and showing their happy expressions make it such a romantic and adorable moment.

Still wandering outside at night, Hua Gu tells herself that she will tell Ming Yang the truth about her being a poor girl and her real identity when he comes back from his mission.  On his return she will also confess that she sincerely likes him.
The next morning, Ming Zhu Er comes to see Hua Gu early and tells her that he is not scared to go through that road as long as she is by his side.  Looks like Ming Zhu Er wants to confess to Hua Gu.  Hua Gu avoids the topic immediately by acting like she is going to lose consciousness if she doesn't eat breakfast.  Lol Hua Gu is such a prankster.
Ming Zhu Er is really worried and wants her to see a doctor but Hua Gu tells him that she will be fine after eating and sleeping for a while and tells him that he can leave.

After Ming Zhu Er leaves, Hua Gu murmurs to herself: Ming Yang come back soon.

Ming Yang has gone to a deserted village to seek an old man.
The old man looks like the leader of Hua Gu's theatrical troupe, the old man who abandoned Qing Er when she was a child.

In Episode 21, Hua Gu comes to visit Ming Yang's house and hears that he finally returned from his mission.  Ming Zhu Er on the other hand is not feeling well and even faints.  Hua Gu has no choice but to keep Ming Zhu Er company while he is resting.
Ming Zhu Er is really taken by Hua Gu and even holds her hands several times which makes her feel very uncomfortable as the one she likes is Ming Yang.
Feeling awkward, Hua Gu leaves Ming Zhu Er precipitately by telling him that the doctor will be coming soon.

Hua Gu then goes to pay a visit to Qing Er.  Ming Yang comes to meet them but is cold and aloof towards Hua Gu and asks her to go home because the King wants to meet Qing Er and to come back tomorrow.  Hua Gu feels unhappy and tells Ming Yang that tomorrow she might not be free to come to meet them.

Ming Yang takes Qing Er to meet the old theatrical troupe leader and asks her if she recognises him.  But Qing Er doesn't remember who he is, neither does the old man remember Qing Er.
Ming Yang asks the old man if he remembers that there were two girls called Hua Gu in his troupe.  The old man replies that he remembers the two girls, one was called Ying Hua Gu and the other one was called Jing Hua Gu.  Qing Er tells the old man that she is Ying Hua Gu.  The old man immediately kneels down to apologize for abandoning Ying Hua Gu long ago.

Qing Er asks the old man if the purple stone necklace that she is wearing belongs to Jing Hua Gu or to her.  The old man replies in tears that he doesn't know and cannot remember.

The King then asks the old man what he knows about Jing Hua Gu,  The latter replies that he knows a lot about Jing Hua Gu; according to him she is a cunning fox who can trick people easily and has taken the money of the theatrical troupe at a very young age.  The old man tells them that Jing Hua Gu has the left the troupe 3 years ago and he doesn't know her current whereabouts.

Ming Yang then asks the old man if he would recognize Jing Hua Gu if he saw her now.  The old man replies that he is sure to recognize her if he met her now.

Qing Er asks the old man if he Knows Yun Yun who used to play with Jing Hua Gu, but the latter cannot recall that name.  (Note: Of course he would not remember Yun Yun as Hua Gu had invented the story about Yun Yun knowing Hua Gu)

Qing Er later asks Ming Yang if that old man could be faking as the leader of the theatrical troupe since he cannot even remember Yun Yun.  Ming Yang replies that it can't be.
troupe leader or not.

During the evening, Hua Gu is wondering around the wishing tree again, speaking out loud her thoughts about being disappointed that Ming Yang treated her so coldly when she came to see him.
However, Hua Gu also admits that she cannot blame Ming Yang completely for his cold attitude because he is still the soldier of the King hence he has a big responsibility on his shoulders.

So Ming Yang cannot place his feelings as a priority.  Hua Gu tells the Wishing Tree that tomorrow she is determined to tell the Ming brother's parents who she has chosen to marry i.e. Ming Yang since she truly loves him.  Hua Gu picks up a red strip of fabric and prepares to throw it on the Wishing Tree to make her wish come true; but stops midway as she believes that her destiny is in her own hands and not in a piece of cloth.  Hua Gu leaves with her horse.

Ming Yang then walks by the Wishing tree and picks up the piece of cloth that Hua Gu had left on the railing.

Ming Yang sits down on the bench next to the Wishing Tree and thinks that although he had made the promise to spend time with Yun Yun on the day he returned from his mission, he was unable to keep his promise because there were too many things troubling his mind currently.

Ming Yang says sorry to Hua Gu in his heart and decides to make a wish to the Tree.  Ming Yang wishes for Yun Yun's protection and happiness.

However, Ming Yang hesitates to throw the red cloth onto the tree then asks himself if he is being foolish right now because he knows that he honestly loves Yun Yun so of course he will take care of her for his whole life.  Hence he does not need the Wishing tree to protect Yun Yun or make her happy.

Ming Yang tells the Wishing tree to just watch him and Yun Yun live happily together.

Me:  Sighs...If love could be that simple in real life, it would be wonderful.  Such wishful thinking from our two main characters ^^

The next day has come for Hua Gu to answer which brother she chooses to marry i.e Ming Yang or Ming Zhu Er.  Hua Gu's servant Ma Zhu Guan is worried that Yun Yun's real identity is revealed and she ends up hurt by the turn of events.  Hua Gu tells Ma Zhu Guan not to worry because she believes that loving someone is not about his/her family, wealth or background.  Hua Gu says that if a person likes her only for her wealth and background then she will not love him.  However, Hua Gu is confident that the person she loves is not such a person.

Yun Yun and her father head towards the Ming family's house.  Hua Gu looks around for Ming Yang but he has not arrived yet.  Hua Gu can't hide her smile when she sees Ming Yang come in, but her smile is quickly replaced by a shocked expression as she notices the leader of the theatrical troupe walking behind Ming Yang.

Hua Gu immediately gets up to leave by making the excuse that she is feeling unwell.  She tries to make her way outside while avoiding the troupe leader's gaze but fails as the latter grabs hold of her arm and turns her towards him.  The old man pulls on Hua Gu's arm to prevent her from escaping and causes her to fall on the ground.  Qing Er angrily scolds the old man for treating Yun Yun badly, but the old man tells them that she is the girl they have been looking for i.e. Jing Hua Gu.

Qing Er asks Yun Yun anxiously if she is really Hua Gu.

Ming Yang's father then asks Yun Yun's father what is happening.  The latter kneels down and apologizes for lying to them.  He tells them the truth that his daughter had died from illness and he asked Hua Gu to act as his daughter.

Ming Yang's father angrily tells them to leave and calls his guards to chase Hua Gu outside his house.  Hua Gu leaves slowly with a heavy heart and sad expression.  Qing Er faints from the stress and Hua Gu turns back to look at Ming Yang sadly but Ma Zhu Guan gestures her to leave the place with them.

The king later orders Ming Yang to investigate what kind of person Jing Hua Gu is in reality.
Ming Yang's parents are outraged for being tricked by Hua Gu and are relieved that the troupe leader has revealed her true identity before it was too late.

Ming Yang requests his father to speak to him privately. To calm down his father's anger, Ming Yang tells him that it is possible that Jing Hua Gu is the princess they have been looking for since they still cannot ascertain whether Qing Er is the real princess or not.

We have now reached Episode 22, Ming Yang's father disagrees that Hua Gu is the princess and believes that she hid her identity so far so that she could keep her fake identity as the rich girl Yun Yun.  But Ming Yang thinks that it is possible that Hua Gu is the real princess.

Ming Yang's father persists that Qing Er is the princess and tells Ming Yang to take Hua Gu to the King to testify that the purple stone necklace belongs to Qing Er.
Ming Yang is irritated by his father's persistence.
His father is just hoping that Qing Er is the princess and ends up getting married to Ming Yang.  (Me: I think Ming Yang's father is too biased and unfair, he will regret it when he knows that Hua Gu is the real princess.)

Yun Yun's father is mad that they missed this opportunity to marry into the Ming family and criticizes Ming Yang for checking Hua Gu's background behind their back.  Hua Gu immediately defends Ming Yang by saying that she is sure that he did not do this on purpose.  The old man gets angry and tells Hua Hu to leave his house after returning everything he gave her.  Hua Gu prepares to leave the house wearing the drags which she wore at the beginning of the story.

Her loyal friend and servant Ma Zhu Guan meets her before she leaves and asks her if she is really leaving.

Hua Gu replies that she did not belong here in the first place.

Ma Zhu Guan asks her if she is going to look for the Ming Yang.  Hau Gu replies which Ming Yang he is talking about?
He replies the Ming Yang in your heart.

(Aigoo,,,this moment is sad as there is a large difference in the status of our main protagonists now; Hua Gu realizes this difference as she is back to her poor self and Ming Yang is from a rich family)...

Hua Gu asks Ma Zhu Guan not to mention Ming Yang.  Ma Zhu Guan tells her: 'Didn't you say that you believe in him?  I am like you, I also believe in him.'

Hua Gu replies sadly: 'But he didn't even say a word to defend me and just let me look bad in front of them.  Ma Zhu Guan I am really really hurt....In reality true love does not exist at all.

However, before leaving Hua Gu is determined to collect the red ginseng.  But the old man refuses to give her the red gingseng becasue she was unable to marry into the Ming family.  Hua Gu takes drastic measures by breaking a cup and holding a piece of broken porcelain next to the old man's throat, menacing to take his life if he doesn't give her the red gingseng.

Ma Zhu Guan appears with the red ginseng and gives it to her.  Ming Yang is also there watching them from outside the room, unnoticed by Hua Gu.  Hua Gu thanks Ma Zhu Guan while Ming Yang is outside wondering if Hua Gu is really such an unscrupulous person.

Hua Gu says her warmest farewells to Ma Zhu Guan before leaving and turns to see Ming Yang standing at the door.

Ming Yang asks her if he should call her Yun Yun or Jing Hua Gu?

Hua Gu angrily asks him if he was already suspecting that she was hiding her identity long before that's why he went to look for that theatrical troupe leader.

Ming Yang acknowledges that he was already suspecting her and that she should not have hidden anything from him.  Hua Gu tells him with teary eyes that he should not have doubted her because she was going to tell him the truth about her being poor on the day he returned.

Hua Gu accuses him of being cold to her on the the day he returned because he already knew that she was a poor girl who could not match a rich guy like him.

Ming Yang tells Hua Gu that she is wrong, that he didn't have this intention.

But Hua Gu is deeply hurt and does not believe him.

Ming Yang calls her Yun Yun in an attempt to stop her from leaving but Hua Gu feels even more annoyed that he called her Yun Yun and leaves.  (Me:  This episode is really sad with all its revelations and misunderstandings.  But I don't think that the misunderstandings are far-fetched because the girl is really poor and the guy is from a noble family, they are world's apart.  It is realistic for Hua Gu to realize that big difference in their background and believe that it will not work between the two of them.  I think that it is Ming Yang's turn to make a move to convince Hua Gu that her background and status do not matter to him because he loves her for who she is.)

Hua Gu stares at the door sign of the house she just left, Ma Zhu Guan comes chasing after her telling her she forgot her belongings.  Hua Gu tells Ma Zhu Guan: 'He (Ming Yang) didn't even come after her...'
Ma Zhu Guan tells her to give Ming Yang some time to think it through.

Hua Gu replies that it doesn't really matter because in the end she got what she wanted i.e. the red gingseng which will help her best friend (i.e. Qing Er aka Ying Hua Gu) recover her health.
(Aaawww no matter what Hua Gu is always thinking about Qing Er, what a good friend she is ^_^  Qing Er should be really thankful to have a friend like Hua Gu who will do anything to obtain a remedy for her and even allow her to be the Princess in her place)

At night, Hua Gu arrives at Qing Er's place but the guards won't let her in and even insult her for daring to come here when she is nothing but a poor girl.  Hua Gu kneels down to beg the guard to let her in and it even starts raining heavily.  Ming Zhu Er then appears to give a hand to Hua Gu for her to get up.  Soaking wet, the both of them enter the house.  Ming Zhu Er tells Hua Gu that he will wait outside while she meets Qing Er.  (Me: I guess Ming Zhu Er has a kind side to him)
Hua Gu sits by Qing Er's bed side and calls her Ying Hua Gu.

Qing Er's dream

Qing Er is having a dream, it's about her past...She is finally recovering her memories of Jing Hua Gu.  Qing Er remembers when the troupe leader was abandoning her in the forest and Jing Hua Gu was crying & begging him not to abandon her or else she will die.  Then a master of Wu Shu appeared and proposed to adopt Ying Hua Gu.

As the Wu Shu master is leaving with Ying Hua Gu,
Jing Hua Gu calls out to her to tell her that she will earn a lot of money to buy a lot of medicine to cure her illness.  Jing Hua Gu tells Ying Hua Gu that she has to stay alive and wait for her.

Back to the reality, Hua Gu tells the sleeping Qing Er that she kept her promise to buy the best medicine to cure her illness and leaves the red gingseng on her bedside.
Hua Gu tells Qing Er that she stay strong to live on and must not die.
Hua Gu to Qing Er: 'You must regain your health and live happily as the princess.  Keep in mind that you are the real princess.  You must hold on to your happiness.  I will have to leave you but I will always wish for your wellbeing'

(Me: Seriously Hua Gu is such a loyal and selfless friend.  Despite her bad health, Qing Er is really fortunate to have such a friend ^_^)

Hua Gu leaves Qing Er's side and is invited for dinner by Ming Zhu Er.

Hua Gu keeps her smile while telling Ming Zhu Er that she is not a rich girl anymore, she is just a poor delinquent girl and a swindler.

Despite her smile, tears start welling out of Hua Gu's eyes.

Ming Zhu Er tells her that she doesn't need to be sad because he will never look down on her although many people are currently doing so.

He tells her that when he learnt about his true origins (i.e. his father was just a drunkard & a failure who died on the streets) it was her who cheered him up to regain his confidence.

Ming Zhu Er tells Hua Gu that she has to be happy.  Hua Gu tells him that she has always been a happy person.  But after taking a gulp of wine, she breaks down and tells him that 'she can't take it anymore' and asks him: 'What have I done wrong? Why is he (Ming Yang) treating me like this? Why?'
Ming Zhu Er tells her that she didn't do anything wrong.  Completely depressed by the turn of events, Hua Gu starts crying heavily and leans her head on Ming Zhu Er's shoulders.  The rain is pouring heavily and thunder is roaring while Hua Gu is crying.

Ah looks like Hua Gu is not the only one devastated by what happened, Ming Yang is also having a hard time as we see him sitting outside under the pouring rain drinking and crying.

Ming Yang asks himself with much guilt: 'Why didn't I meet you (Hua Gu) on the 1st day of my return  then you would have told me the truth! Why didn't I deal with the situation better?
Why didn't I consider your (Hua Gu's) feelings?'

(Me: Come on it's not too late, you can still make things right.  Just go see her and tell her your true feelings and how sorry you are for hurting her ^^''  I think Ming Yang is really hurt too for making Hua Gu sad.  Remember the previous episode where he carried a handkerchief on him because he was worried that Hua Gu might cry again.  This shows that Hua Gu really means a lot to him and he does sincerely care about her).

The next day, Ming Yang goes to visit Qing Er.
Qing Er tells him that yesterday, Yun Yun came to see her and left the red gingseng for her.

Ming Yang realizes that Hua Gu was not after wealth but only wanted the red gingseng to save Qing Er.

Qing Er tells Ming Yang that Hua Gu faked her identity to be Yun Yun because she wanted to retrieve the red gingseng for her.  Qing Er tells Ming Yang that she really wants to meet Hua Gu.  Ming Yang replies that Hua Gu is gone.

Qing Er tells Ming Yang that they need to find Hua Gu no matter where she has gone to.  Ming Yang replies that he doesn't know where Hua Gu has gone to and she surely would not want to see him again.
(Me: Dang! you're so wrong Ming Yang! Just go look for her and apologize, Hua Gu will forgive you.)
Qing Er tells Ming Yang that they need to find her or else Hua Gu will hate him for all her life.
Ming Yang then admits determinedly that he is not satisfied and that he won't let Hua Gu hate him for all his life.

We move back to Hua Gu and Ming Zhu Er.  Hua Gu wakes up and realizes that she has been leaning on Ming Zhu Er's shoulder all night.  She apologizes to Ming Zhu Er immediately and tells him that she fell asleep after crying so much last night.  Ming Zhu Er tells her there is no need for her to apologize and that he wants to take care of her for her whole life.
Ming Zhu Er takes her to meet his parents...

(Me: Are you crazy!!? I know Ming Zhu Er is more forward with his feelings when compared to Ming Yang but still doesn't he know that his father will surely chase him out of the house if he brings back Hua Gu with him o_O How can he be so careless?  But I have to admit that he is brave. ^^'')

At the sight of Hua Gu in her torn and ragged clothes, Mr Ming turns away from her.

But oh my gosh, Ming Zhu Er vehemently tells his father that even if he objects, he will marry Hua Gu because she is a kind girl and he loves her.  Mr Ming is stunned by Ming Zhu Er's words and asks him what nonsense he is spouting.  Ming Zhu Er replies back that his decision has already been made to have Hua Gu as his wife and that he will not step back from this decision even if he is chased out of the house.

Just as Ming Zhu Er and Hua Gu turn to leave, Ming Yang enters the room and asks Hua Gu if she really wants to marry his older brother.

Hua Gu stares at Ming Yang and cannot give an answer.  Ming Zhu Er grabs Hua Gu's hand and won't let go.

But Hua Gu has the good sense to pull her hand out of Ming Zhu Er's grasp.  (Me:  Ming Zhu Er is really acting too rashly.  He should have at least asked Hua Gu her feelings before making all these decisions on his own)

Hua Gu slowly walks towards Ming Yang and tells him (out of anger surely) that she will marry Ming Zhu Er.

(Me: Geez, that's not what you want Hua Gu...you're making a big mistake here out of your pride & anger)

Ming Yang's mother immediately tells Hua Gu to think rationally before making such an important decision as marriage.

Ming Yang's father is furious and tells his wife that Ming Zhu Er doesn't even consider them as his family as he has taken all the decisions on his own without consulting them.

Mrs Ming then ask Ming Yang to say something for his brother.

The episode ends with Ming Yang looking lost as to what to say for his brother's defense.

A lot happened in the last four episodes I have recapped, so I think I'll end this post with this episode.

See you for the next post of the continuation of 'Ming Yang Hua Gu'.

I hope you guys like it.

Bye Bye
